I have been riding bikes my entire life, I started riding bikes as a kid and soon started riding BMX competitively. When I lost my hand and became an upper limb amputee, I just wanted to get back to bike riding. I have attended both Ability to Ride days organised by Roger, Camden Cycles, Specialized and Southern Prosthetics & Orthotics. I had so much fun on the first ride day in 2018 at Greenvalleys Mountain Bike Park. The second time was held at Camden Showgrounds in 2019, I took my wife and she loved riding the Specialized Turbo Levo ebikes too. For the first time ever she was able to keep up with me and we were able to ride together. The Specialized e-bikes make mountain bike riding a lot easier to do. I didn’t have to push hard on the pedals, which meant I was more stable with steering, as I didn’t need to pull hard on the bars to pedal up hills. Having only one hand makes riding a bike very difficult, and this was made possible by Ability to Ride and the help of the mechanics from Camden Cycles who professionally set up the bike to my specific needs. They were great with all the participants ensuring that no matter what their ability they made it possible for everyone to get onto a bike. This is a great empowering experience and I would recommend anyone that has the opportunity to participate should put their doubts aside and give it a go. You’ll be pleasantly surprised what you can achieve.
I have been an amputee for almost 4.5 years. I visited Camden Cycles where I had the good fortune of meeting Roger Withers who is also an amputee. Not long after this meeting, Roger organised his second “E” Bike amputee ride day with the support of Camden Cycles, Specialized and Southern Prosthetics and Orthotics. The ride was held at Camden sports ground. The event was well attended from people all over Sydney. Around 15 “E” bikes were supplied with the manpower from Camden Cycles to customise each bike to the rider. Once fitted out, and everyone had been shown how to use the bike, we all took off for an extensive ride – a great success which was evident by everyone’s enthusiasm at the BBQ afterwards. I was so impressed with the Specialized “E” Bike, I bought one a few days later from Camden Cycles. This bike has given me the freedom I thought I would not have again once I lost my leg.Without Roger, Camden Cycles, Specialized and Southern Prosthetics and Orthotics this wonderful day would not have taken place. Getting involved with E-Bikes and the people associated with them has been a tremendous enhancement in my life as an amputee. It has not only given me the freedom to ride and exercise but has also given me an interest that I can accomplish. I am better off mentally, physically and socially. I do believe that the Ability To Ride program will benefit many more people, as I have”
The Specialized Turbo Levo ebike, Ability To Ride program and support from Camden Cycles has helped to give me purpose and feel like I am part of something special. The ride days gave me a reason to get out of the house, get involved and gave me a chance to meet new people. I enjoyed being able to meet other amputees, to be able to share the experience together and help others where I could. The experience of riding the Specialized Turbo Levo with Roger and all the other riders, helped me both physically and mentally and I look forward to the day when I can purchase my own Specialized ebike. For now, I look forward to more Ability To Ride days, enjoying each other’s company and the great outdoors. Regards, Dennis.
I joined Roger and the team from Camden Cycles for an e-bike ride in Centennial Park, Camden in November. This was the first time I had tried an e-bike, and as a below knee amputee I found it absolutely fantastic. I used to cycle a lot prior to my accident but have not been able to enjoy a bike ride since, although I have tried a couple of times. Using the e-bike made the whole experience effortless, and for me the adjustable height seat mechanism was fantastic and made riding possible. Also the option to choose which level of pedal power assistance made such a difference, because I was able to cycle with little effort on the flat, giving myself exercise, but I used the turbo option going up hills, which made it feasible for me to enjoy all terrains. I also really enjoyed the social aspect of meeting up with others for a really beautiful ride around the park, which I would never have been able to enjoy without the advanced technology of an e-bike."
